Dr. Madison Smart-McCarthy

Dr. Madison Smart-McCarthy is a postdoctoral resident at FPA. She completed her Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the Virginia Consortium Program in Norfolk, Virginia. Prior to joining the team at FPA, Madison provided direct clinical care since 2010 across multiple settings such as in community centers, public schools, private practice, and universities. She also served as an adjunct psychology professor at a community college for five years and has been a part of a National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) study involving efficacy of a virtual therapy platform.

Dr. Smart-McCarthy conducts assessment and evaluations for children, adolescents, and adults. She uses a client-centered approach that focuses on identifying the needs of the individual while using evidenced-based assessments to help clarify psychological concerns and identify appropriate recommendations for treatment. Dr. Smart-McCarthy has experience conducting research on broadband measures of personality and psychopathology in adolescents. In addition to psychological testing, Dr. Smart-McCarthy provides direct clinical care to clients. She frequently incorporates empirically supported therapeutic interventions from cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), mindfulness, and interpersonal frameworks.
